Charles Knapp Named General Seminary Vice President for Advancement

Charles Knapp Named General Seminary Vice President for Advancement

New York City – The Very Rev. Ward B. Ewing, Dean and President of General Seminary, has announced that a highly experienced development professional, Charles N. Knapp, has joined the staff as Vice President for Institutional Advancement and Alumni/ae and Church Relations.  A New Yorker and a longtime Episcopalian, Knapp began his duties on November 9, 2009.

Thirteen years ago, Mr. Knapp started his career in fundraising at Yale University, where, as Associate Director of Development, he had significant responsibilities during and after the university’s $1.7 billion Yale Campaign.  Later, at Washington National Cathedral, where Knapp was Major Gifts Officer, he secured sizable gifts from many previously uncultivated prospects.  Development positions at Columbia University and at NYU Medical Center are also a part of his impressive career.  Immediately before coming to GTS, Knapp served at the League of American Orchestras in New York, overseeing all annual, planned and campaign gift activity with individuals. The organization was in the midst of a $25 million comprehensive campaign.

“Charles’ long career has had a dual focus on education and on the church,” said Dean Ewing, “and that makes him a perfect fit for GTS.  He has had extensive fundraising experience in the education sector as well as in the church, and is also an active and committed Episcopalian. It is a pleasure to welcome him to the staff.” Knapp is treasurer and a member of the vestry at St. Ignatius of Antioch Episcopal Church on Manhattan’s Upper West Side. He also chaired the search committee for their ninth rector.

Mr. Knapp is a 1990 graduate of Yale University, where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music History.  In college days he sang with the Society of Orpheus and Bacchus and was a member of the legendary Whiffenpoofs.  He presently sings in his parish’s evensong choir and maintains an ongoing interest in early music, opera, and chamber music.

General Seminary Receives $5 Million Gift For New Library

New York City -- The General Theological Seminary (GTS) has received two gifts totaling $5 million in honor of the late Bishop Christoph

Keller, Jr. to complete construction of a new library for the Seminary. The donors are Bishop Keller’s widow and former GTS Trustee, Mrs.

Caroline Keller Winters and his son, the Rev. Dr. Christoph Keller, III, and his family.  Decades before his wife’s term of service,

Bishop Keller himself served on the Seminary’s Board of Trustees. He studied at GTS in the 1950’s and later received the Seminary’s

Doctor of Sacred Theology in 1968.  The Bishop’s son Christoph Keller, III received his M.Div. degree in 1982 and General’s Doctor of

Theology degree in 2008 and so the Keller family’s association with GTS has been extremely close. “This gift represents the love and

commitment of this entire family for our Lord, for the Episcopal Church, for theological education, and for General Seminary,” said Dean

Ewing in an October 9 announcement to Seminary trustees. The library occupies the ground floor a new building on Ninth Avenue designed by

noted architectural firm Polshek Partnership. The building is reaching the final stages of completion. Floor to ceiling windows of the

reading room will provide dramatic, sweeping views of the Seminary’s historic gardens.

The Rt. Rev. Christoph Keller (1915-1995) served as the 10th Bishop of Arkansas from 1970 to 1981. A visionary leader, Bishop Keller lead

the diocese through years of accelerating change including a revision of the Book of Common Prayer, the ordination of women, and the

greater recognition of the ministry of lay persons in the church. Bishop Keller placed a high value on the need for well-educated

leadership in the church, serving as a Seminary trustee for close to twenty years.  Sharing his father’s concern for education, Dr.

Keller completed his doctorate at GTS, calling the Seminary  the “flagship” for research and learning in the Episcopal Church. “Today,

more than ever, we need educated leaders for the church and for our world,” said Dr. Keller. “A generation has grown up without the

church and with almost no knowledge of the Christian tradition.  We need teachers and leaders who, steeped in the scholarship and

tradition of our Church, can address the issues of our culture from that knowledge.”

The oldest Episcopal library in the United States, General Seminary’s collection is a major theological resource of over 240,000 volumes.

It supports the work of students and faculty at General and of visiting scholars from throughout the world. The library’s special

collections of rare volumes include early Bibles, English theology, and important editions of patristic texts, devotional works, and

sermons from the 15th to the 18th centuries. While the new library is being built about 90% of the Seminary’s holdings are in

climate-controlled storage, while 15,000 essential volumes are housed in an interim facility on campus. “We are enormously grateful to

the Keller family for this generous gift,” said the library’s director, the Rev. Andrew G. Kadel. “The gifts will ensure that future

generations of teachers and learners will have unparalleled access to this wonderful collection as we enter the library third century of

service.”

New York City – On Tuesday, March 9 at 8 pm the Center for Christian Spirituality at The General janet-ruffing-photo 1Theological Seminary will hold the 2010 Kay Butler Gill Lecture in Christian Spirituality.  Janet K. Ruffing, RSM will deliver the address, entitled Love Mysticism: Relic or Contemporary Reality?  Dr. Ruffing is Professor of the Practice of Spirituality and Ministerial Leadership at Yale Divinity School.  A Sister of Mercy from California, she previously was professor of spirituality and spiritual direction at Fordham University.  She has published five books: Uncovering Stories of Faith: Spiritual Direction and Narrative; Mysticism and Social Transformation (ed); Spiritual Direction: Beyond the Beginning; Elisabeth Leseur: Selected Writings;  and To Tell the Sacred Tale: Spiritual Direction and Narrative. She is a founding member of Spiritual Directors International and is currently President Elect of The Society for the Study of Christian Spirituality. She has been an associate editor for The Way and serves on the editorial board for Presence

The Center for Christian Spirituality has a twofold mission. Drawing upon the rich resources of an accredited seminary, the Center educates and forms leaders to offer ministries of spiritual guidance, including spiritual direction. The Center also offers opportunities for spiritual growth to anyone seeking to enhance their relationship with the holy.

The Kay Butler Gill Lecture in Christian Spirituality heralds the place of the field of spirituality within the theological academy. In 2008, the lecture was endowed by a generous gift from the Kay Butler Gill estate, in gratitude for Kay’s years of study and formation at The Center for Christian Spirituality and ministry as a spiritual director who, as she so thoughtfully put it, “had spiritual conversations with others.”

The CCS is a learning center of The General Theological Seminary of the Episcopal Church, founded in 1817.
