Programs of the Center

  • The Certificate of Study in Christian Spirituality is ideal for students who are discerning a call to further study, or are seeking focused study in this field. It is granted upon completion of six courses (2-3 credits each) in the field of Christian Spirituality.
  • Master of Arts in Christian Spirituality. This degree is designed for students seeking spiritual enrichment, or who are preparing for lay ministries in spiritual formation.
  • Master of Sacred Theology in Christian Spirituality. The emphasis of the S.T.M. degree is on research and concentrated theological study in the field.
  • Cooperative program with the Shalem Institute.  Students interested in formation for the ministry of spiritual direction may receive academic credit for certain programs at the Shalem Institute for Spiritual Formation to be applied toward a degree with the Center.
  • Non-degree study: students, lay and ordained, may audit classes or take them for credit without working toward a degree.
  • Other offerings: The Center seeks to nourish ongoing formative experiences in students of the Center ,the Seminary, and the Church in the city and beyond. It offers events such as quiet days, groups for prayer and discussion throughout the year which are open to any interested person. The Center also coordiantes the presence of visiting spiritual directors for members of the Seminary community.

In order to promote accessibility to a wide audience the Center’s degree programs may be undertaken through either full-time or part-time study, and its classes are offered in a variety of formats.

  • Fall (Michaelmas) and Spring (Easter) Terms: In fall and spring terms, Center classes are offered throughout the week and at various times of day including late afternoon and evening courses. Classes typically meet one day a week.  Our courses may be found under the heading "Ascetical Theology" in the Seminary catalog.
  • Summer (Trinity) Term: We offer a variety of courses in the Summer, including single week and Saturday courses. Our popular "Summers at General" program takes place during an intensive two weeks in June have attracted students from across the country and around the world. Click here for more information.
  • January (Epiphany) Term: In January we offer three courses, each in an intensive one-week format, which may be audited or applied toward any of the programs described above. Click here for more information.

Students in Summer and January courses receive reading assignments in advance of the program and complete written work in the months following.  Classes meet daily during the time in residence, and gatherings for prayer form a vital component of our time together.  Detailed information on these programs is posted in the spring and fall each year for the coming term.
