Professor of Ascetical Theology

Professor Elisabeth Koenig’s field is the classical tradition of Christian theology and spirituality from the New Testament to the present.  She has particular interest in patristic spirituality, especially the desert tradition, Origen, Gregory of Nyssa, and Augustine; the fourteenth century English mystics, especially Julian of Norwich; Christian discernment; spiritual practice, the relationship between theology and psychology, and between theology and art.  Extracurricular activities have included lectures on pilgrimages to England and Italy and consultations on discernment in contexts as varied as commissions on ministry and a non-profit healthcare corporation.  Professor Koenig is currently at work on a book on discernment.
