BISHOP
The Rt. Rev. W. Michie Klusmeyer '80
Bishop, Diocese of West Virginia

I am most grateful and appreciative of the education and formation which I received at GTS, and would like to give back the community which has meant so much to me. I believe that the unique environment of GTS provides a wonderful opportunity for preparation for ordained ministry. The addition of the Tutu Center will add tremendously to the excellent traditions of General. In addition, as we continue to envision new forms of ministry throughout the Church, I believe that General Seminary can (and should) be at the forefront of where God is calling us: Distance learning, lay ministry courses, etc., are all ways in which we need to adapt to meet ‘Today’s Church.’ For the past 25 years, I have found that education and formation have been at the heart of almost everything we do as Christians, and that the proper preparation of our clergy is paramount, along with the strengthening of our lay ministers. I would hope to bring my experience in rural, suburban and urban situations to help in the planning of the future of General Seminary.

PRIEST/DEACON
The Rev. Lucinda Laird, ’82
Rector, St. Matthew’s Church, Louisville, KY

I love General Seminary. More to the point, I think General Seminary is crucial to the life and mission of the Episcopal Church. I served on the Executive Committee of the Associate Alumni/ae for 10 years, ending in 2005, and feel connected and informed. Further, in the 25 years since I left GTS, I have served in large and small parishes, in three different dioceses, on various diocesan and national committees, on the boards of local agencies, on the Board of Trustees of a small college, and have traveled extensively throughout the Anglican Communion. I would be honored to serve on the Board of Trustees, and offer my time, energy, and experience. General Seminary’s mission is to educate and form leaders for the Church in a changing world. That mission is vital, and General does it very well. I want to be part of ensuring that General continues to do just that, and to do it better and better.

The Rev. William Lutz, D.Min. ’78
Rector, Trinity Church, Elmira, NY

In this very exciting time in the life of the General Theological Seminary, I would like to continue to serve on its Board of Trustees. Over my past three terms, I have come to see this seminary live into the vision on which we have been working for the past few years, as "an institution called to educate and form leaders for the Church in a changing world." As a board member, I have been privileged to be part of a leadership team which has been transformed. In its stewardship and organization I am convinced that the Board’s work which was begun in 1999 is moving forward in positive ways. Having served on various committees over the past few years, we as a Board now enter a time when the consolidation of our work in commissions have given a wider participation in the vision of the Seminary. At this juncture in the life of General, I would be honored to represent the Alumni/ae in offering my time, experience, and enthusiasm in being a steward of the Seminary’s resources, vision and mission.

LAITY
Dr. Courtney Cowart, GTS MA ’94, Th.D ’01
Director of Strategic Planning, Office of Disaster Relief,
Diocese of Louisiana, New Orleans, LA

As a two time graduate of the seminary (I received both my M.A. and Th.D. from General), and former Adjunct Professor, my knowledge of seminary life and General’s unique approach to formation of students runs deep, and my relationships with fellow faculty, alums, members of the administration, and students span the decade of the 1990’s up to 2005. I worked as grants officer for Trinity Church Wall Street prior to 9/11, when I helped forge the ministry to the recovery workers at St. Paul’s Chapel. At the Office of Disaster Relief in the Episcopal Diocese of Louisiana, we are working intensively both to contribute to the healing of trauma and loss experienced by survivors of Katrina, and to establish just structures that will enable relationships of mutual charity to live beyond our immediate crisis and transform our society. Because much of my work is currently focused on issues of racial reconciliation in New Orleans, I am particularly excited about the opening of the Tutu Center. I believe GTS could play a major leadership role during an era when our country is experiencing something of an American awakening on domestic and international justice issues. I am also particularly interested in the new potential for GTS to host cutting-edge continuing education conferences in our new facilities. I have extensive experience in designing programs and recruiting speakers, and I would very much like to make a contribution in these areas in years to come. I would also hope that my background in philanthropy could be useful to the seminary as a member of the Board, and would serve enthusiastically to help steward the development of our beloved institution.

William B. Eagleson, Jr.
Chairman, Mellon Bank (ret), Radnor, PA

I spent my business life in banking beginning at the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia in 1949, and then for thirty-four years at Girard Bank in Philadelphia. I was Chairman of Girard bank from 1974 to 1985 through its merger with Mellon when I became Chairman of Mellon Bank Corporation. It has also been my privilege to serve on advisory bodies to both the U.S. Treasury Department and the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System. I have been involved with the Seminary for more than ten years, first as a member of the President’s Advisory Council and later in the visioning activity and on the Chelsea Square Advisory Group. For the last six years, I have served on the Board of Trustees, and currently I am Chairman of the Seminary’s Audit Committee.

Alumni/ae Executive Committee: This slate of candidates for the Alumni Executive Committee (AEC) of the Associate Alumni/ae was approved by the AEC. The top three vote-getters will begin a three-year term January 1, 2008. Make your three selections by marking the box next to the names of the candidates.

The Rev. Andew Cooley ’85
Rector, St. Mark’s, Durango, CO

I have served as Rector of St. Mark's Episcopal Church, Durango Colorado for the past 12 years and am eager to stay connected and offer my support to General. This is an important moment in the life of the church and a strong connection with the heartbeat of the church that the Associate Alumni/ae offers is essential for the Seminary to raise up leaders for the 21st century. I am excited about the new opportunities at General, especially through the Tutu Center and the redevelopment of Sherrill, and hope that my enthusiasm, commitment and experience as priest and leader can be of service to the Associate Alumni/ae and General at this moment in her life.

The Rev. Susan L. Davidson ’94
Rector, All Saints Church, River Ridge, LA

I have served as Rector of All Saints’, New Orleans for the past nine years, and as a member of the Alumni/ae Executive Committee for the past three years. I am excited about the expanding opportunities for continuing education and renewal which the new Tutu Center will provide, about the possible collaboration with other seminaries in continuing education offerings, and about the current plans for the redevelopment of Chelsea Square. In addition to my continuing affection for and financial support of the Seminary, I have been privileged to send to GTS two seminarians from All Saints in the past seven years.

The Rev. Richard Kukowski ’76
Retired, Silver Spring, MD

As a person who came over from Rome into Canterbury, my time at General was key to my coming to understand Anglican worship, theology, doctrine and discipline. After 27 years as rector of Transfiguration Church, a multi-racial, multi-ethnic and multi-cultural church in the Diocese of Washington, I am now beginning new ministries at Washington National Cathedral and in the Anglican Church of Southern Africa. General has been instrumental in helping me to prepare for these new ministries. Having served one term on the Alumni/ae Executive Committee and having seen General plan and move into the 21st century, I would like to continue to offer my own experience with multiculturalism through this Committee. As its student body and alumni/ae become more diverse and reflective of the greater Church, the AEC is an important component in the continuing health and growth of the Seminary. I would be honored to serve again on this Committee.

The Very Rev. Mark B. Pendleton ’91
Dean, Christ Church Cathedral, Hartford, CT

I have served as the Dean of Christ Church Cathedral in Hartford, Connecticut since 2004. My current work as a cathedral dean allows me opportunities to build relationships with many of the clergy and laity of the Diocese of Connecticut, as well as through the Consortium of Endowed Episcopal Parishes. My wider church involvement continues to focus on global mission and Latino ministry. I serve as the Episcopal Church’s clergy representative to the Covenant Committee with the Anglican Province of Mexico. I became Class Agent for GTS ’91 in 2006. Before then I frankly had very little to do with the seminary. I rarely visited and I did not give of my time or treasure. I was grateful that the Leaders for the Church campaign allowed my wife and me to consider what we both received from General and offered us an invitation to be generous, give back and stay connected.

The Rev. Dr. Virginia M. Sheay ’75
Assisting Clergy, Trinity Church, Solebury, PA

Since graduation in 1975, I continue to be filled with pride and gratitude for GTS, pride because of the seminary’s extraordinary commitment to providing the best education for leaders in the church, and gratitude because I have been blessed beyond measure by the grace gifts GTS has given me both in my personal spiritual growth and in my ordained ministry as a priest. As a long-time supporter of General, my passion is to encourage and commit others to General. This I have done as Rector, former member of the National Executive Council, and currently as class agent for the Leaders for the Church campaign.
