Academic Life ~ Center for Jewish Christian Studies and Relations ~ Inter-Seminary Dialogue Series

Inter-Seminary Dialogue Series

During the fall and spring terms of each academic year, students and faculty advisors from several theological schools in the metropolitan area meet to engage in dialogue about various subjects of interest to both the Jewish and Christian faiths. On each occasion, students from the host seminary prepare a brief introduction on the chosen topic, usually reflecting something of their own faith tradition; they then initiate a general dialogue among all participants.  Each occasion has proven to be a learning experience as the dialogue reveals insights, issues, and concerns of the various traditions.  Lasting friendships also frequently develop among the regular participants.

In the year following the events of September 11, 2001, the topic was a discussion of the issues surrounding the biblical texts that seem to advocate violence and how clergy of the different congregations might approach these texts in a thoughtful but deliberate manner. During 2002-2003, two scripture passages were selected for intensive study:  Genesis 22 dealing with the binding of Isaac, and John 19 dealing with the Passion of Christ.  In 2003-2004 the topic was marriage, including the meaning of marriage, procreation, same-sex relationships, ending relationships, intermarriage, celibacy, and family purity issues. During 2004-2005 discussions focused on "Religion and the Public Square;" the 2005-2006 theme was "Authority in Religion."

Seminaries participating in the dialogue series currently include: Academy for Jewish Religion, Jewish Theological Seminary, St. Vladimir’s Seminary, Union Theological Seminary, General Theological Seminary, Hebrew Union College - Jewish Institute of Religion, St. Joseph’s Seminary, and Yeshivat Chovevei Torah Rabbinical School.  The theme to be discussed during 2006-2007 is “Death and Dying.”  The schedule of specific topics and host institutions is as follows:
