The Matriculation Ceremony

Thursday, September 25, 2014 at 5:30 pm

Since 1822 every student has been a part of this long standing tradition in which they sign their names into the Matriculation Book.  On the feast of St. Michael and All Angels, you too become part of this tradition. You are encouraged to invite your immediate family to join in a festive dinner following the ceremony.

MOVING IN

Your Dorm/Apartment:

  • Single rooms and Three-room units are furnished with a twin-size bed, desk, dresser and chair. You will need to bring bedding, linens, lamps, pillow, etc.
  • Studios, One, Two, and Three Bedroom apartments are completely UNFURNISHED.

On arrival at GTS:

  • Enter at the MainGate (440 West 21st Street). Press the buzzer and speak with the front desk attendant on duty. Introduce yourself to the Front Desk Attendant and advise him/her that you are moving in. You will be given a key package containing your keys with a note explaining each use.

To make moving-in to the Close easier:

  • Living in Dodge, Dehon, or Kohne, use the Chapel Gate on West 20th Street.
  • Living in Edson, White, or Lorillard, use the Main Gate on West 21st Street.
  • For security reasons, gates must not be left unattended. Please designate someone to monitor gates and your belongings as you make trips from the gates to your building.

Keys:

  • Keys may not be duplicated under any circumstance.
  • Requests for additional keys must be requested from the Front desk.
  • Keys will be given ONLY to adult members of the household.

Phones: For information on phone installation, please call the housing office at 212-243-5150, extension 208.

Air Conditioners:

  • During the summer months, air-conditioning units with 3,000 to 5,000 BTU's can easily keep your single dorm room cool.
  • For larger spaces, a unit with 8,000 to 10,000 will be sufficient.
  • For safety reasons, students are NOT allowed to install A/C units. Please contact maintenance at ext: 219 or 498.

Electrical Appliances:

  • It is recommended that you use surge protectors and/or a UPS (uninterrupted power supply) for use with personal computers and printers.
  • In Dehon and Edson, heat-producing electrical appliances can NOT be used including: toasters, toaster ovens, hotpots, hotplates, microwaves, or any similar devices. They may overload electrical circuits and potentially cause a fire.

Fire Safety & Storage:

  • Please keep hallways, stairs, landings and entrances clear.
  • Storage is not available, so please be cautious when packing.
  • When unpacking, be sure to collapse all empty boxes and place for recycling at the Main gate. Normal garbage recycling is located in the basement of all buildings.

Parking:

  • Parking spaces on the street are difficult to find, and garage parking expensive. Transportation in New York City is inexpensive, particularly the subway and bus systems.
  • Zip Car Memberships are also available. Please contact Bonnie Rountree (ext. 206 / This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.) for more information.
  • Alternate side of the street parking is observed on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays between 9 a.m. - 10:30 a.m. On the Seminary side of 20th Street, (the north side) alternate parking is Monday and Thursday; on 20th Street, (the south side) alternate parking is Tuesday and Friday. On the Seminary side of 21st Street (the south side) alternate parking is Tuesday and Friday. Please use this as a guide for parking when moving-in.

Work Orders:

Lockouts: If you are locked out of your housing unit, go to the Front Desk. You will be loaned a key which must be returned.

  • Between the hours of 7:00 a.m. and 10:00 p.m. you will be loaned a key (which must be returned immediately.)
  • Between the hours of 10:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m. you will be charged a $20.00 lockout fee, if the keys are not returned to the front desk by 8:30 a.m.

Banking: The seminary participates in the IBM Metro Credit Union which provides free check and saving accounts.

  • You are advised to insert the box number assigned to you to assist the mailroom attendant with prompt and correct delivery.

For Package Deliveries:

  • The address to be used for all deliveries is 440 W. 21 Street, New York, NY 10011. (i.e. UPS, FEDEX, DHL, Messenger service.) Please be sure to check the manner in which deliveries will be sent.
  • The front desk staff will notify you if you have an express mail delivery for pick-up; all other items will be sent to the mailroom unless you specify otherwise.
  • Heavy items are normally held at the front desk for pick-up. Items must be collected on the day you are notified.

Your old address: Fill out forwarding information at your home post office so mail can follow you.

The Mail Room:

  • The mail room is located in the Moore Building on the ground floor.
  • Hours of operation:
    • Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
    • Saturday, 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.
  • The mailroom is closed on all holidays observed by the USPS, and other seminary holidays.
  • You may call to make arrangements to collect packages or other items after the opening hours.

Routine for United States Postal Service (USPS):

  • Incoming mail arrival times vary.
  • Outgoing mail is given to the US postal carrier at that time.
  • All outgoing mail can be put in the outgoing mail slot by the mail room door.
  • Incoming mail is distributed to mail boxes.
  • At the end of the day, all remaining outgoing mail less than 1 lb. will be taken to the local corner mail box.

Services:

  • Metered mail. Payments are accepted by check only, made payable to GTS.
  • Send out packages for all classes of domestic and foreign mail except Overnight Express.
  • We receive and distribute all campus mail and US mail.
  • Customer service questions will be addressed between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.
  • All other USPS needs may be received by neighborhood US post offices, i.e., certified mail, etc.
  • It has been our experience that the letter carrier will not take heavy packages. Heavy packages, must be taken directly to the post office or call for a pick-up at a cost to you.

Campus Mail: Mail within the GTS community can be dropped in the campus mail slot in the mail room. An envelope is not necessary; however the name of the recipient must be clearly written.

    Special Delivery:

    • You will be notified of all special delivery packages/items we receive.
    • Packages/items not collected by 3 pm Monday through Friday are sent to the mailroom.
    • Items too large for your mailbox are stored in a locker; a parcel notice will be placed in your mailbox. The notice will have the locker number and the key where your package is stored; lockers are located on the wall across from the mailboxes.
    • Please return the key and lock to the campus mail slot after retrieving your parcel.

    Mailbox etiquette:

    • Please empty your mail box regularly. Overstuffed mail boxes cause difficulty for the sorters and slow down the delivery process.
    • If you are planning to be away for several days, inform the mail room so that your mail can be set aside until your return.
    • If you are planning to be away for several weeks, the mail room can forward your first class mail. Mailing labels with the address must be provided as well as the start and end dates for forwarding. If you have questions, please contact the mailroom coordinator, or the Director of Campus services.

    Copiers and Copy Codes:

    • Copiers for your use are located on the ground floor of the Seabury Building, as well as the Library.
    • To obtain a copy code and training on the copies please check with the mailroom coordinator who will schedule training during the first three weeks of the Michaelmas Term.
