Sherred Society

The Jacob Sherred Society

Jacob Sherred, a prominent Episcopalian in nineteenth-century New York, ensured the future of The General Theological Seminary by making the first bequest. As a lasting tribute to his memory, generosity and leadership, the Board of Trustees has established The Jacob Sherred Society to recognize those who, today, make gifts that continue to ensure the future of the Seminary.
Persons making an irrevocable deferred gift to The General Theological Seminary through any deferred giving vehicle are invited to membership in The Jacob Sherred Society. The names of the members of the Society are recorded in the Sherred Society’s Book of Remembrance. In this way they participate in the special prayers offered each year on All Saints’ Day by the Seminary for its benefactors, a hallowed and long-standing Seminary tradition.

From time to time, the Seminary holds a meeting of The Jacob Sherred Society at Chelsea Square which allows the members to meet with the Dean, Trustees, faculty, students and staff. The day concludes with a special Eucharist offered for the members of the Society in The Chapel of the Good Shepherd, followed by the Society’s Annual Dinner in the Refectory, at which new members are inducted. This day on The Close allows the entire Seminary community to express appreciation, and affords the opportunity to publicly recognize the generosity of The Sherred Society’s members.
