An update from President Markham

The General Theological Seminary is exploring a variety of lease arrangements with the School of Sacred Music (SSM), which is currently a short-term tenant of the Close.

Any agreement it reaches with the SSM will be consistent with the Seminary’s mission and respect GTS’ core commitment to inclusivity.

SSM is a new initiative which aims to revitalize the choral tradition in worship services. Founded by a group of lay Roman Catholics, the SSM is committed to a spirit of ecumenism and inclusion of all people. It plans to engage with students, church musicians and congregations, and members of the public.

The GTS Board gave its unanimous backing to enter into negotiations with SSM at its November meeting and for these negotiations to continue at its recent February meeting.

GTS faces significant revenue and cashflow challenges. In fiscal year 2023, GTS’ operating expenses were $7 million, against an annual income of $4.3 million. The Seminary has no funding source for any emergency capital expenditure, or deferred maintenance, which is estimated to be tens of millions of dollars.

We understand that this period of transition is a difficult time for students, Faculty, staff and alumni, and we are committed to keeping you informed as we navigate this change.
