Three-Day Intensive

Preaching is a form of spiritual guidance, certainly for hearers, but also for preachers. This course invites in-depth exploration of the experience of preaching, both for those who preach and those who listen to sermons, seeing the ministry of proclamation as a means through which God in the power of the Holy Spirit forms us and ultimately works to transform us.

The course is open to both students seeking credit and to auditors. For-credit students will prepare a sermon before the course, deliver the sermon during class time, and in the weeks following the class, write a final paper that is a theological and spiritually autobiographical commentary on their sermon. Auditors may have the opportunity to preachalso, depending on enrollment, or they may choose simply to be literally auditors who engage the spirituality of the preaching moment from the perspective of those who hear.

This course is appropriate for anyone drawn to the ministry of proclamation, including experienced clergy and seminarians, and lay persons who wish to gain the tools to derive greater spiritual benefit from their experience of sermons. Enrollment of for-credit students is limited to ten. Students pursuing an Master of Divinity degree at General Seminary may consider this course as part of their Michaelmas 2013 enrollment: They must have previously completed PR1-Preaching in the Liturgy and should also consult with Prof. Mitties DeChamplain in preparation for this course.

The course serves as a practicum in the Spiritual Direction program.
