PR 120 – EXTEMPORANEOUS PREACHING
This preaching practicum engages participants in the practice of preaching extemporaneously, where the words of the homily are, for the most part, created at the moment of utterance and without the use of a full manuscript. The preaching for the course happens under a variety of different circumstances: from a homily prepared with 24 hours lead time to homilies prepared under pressure of time—with one hour or less to prepare a message. The outcome of the exercises is to condition preachers' reflexes for improvisation and spontaneity in their embrace of certain liturgical/worship occasions.
