The Distinguished Alumni Award Recipients 2025
Abolition, Audacity, and Abundance:
Honoring The Venerable Douglas Edwards,
MDiv ’84, DMin
At this year’s Alumni Memorial Eucharist, The General Theological Seminary community gathered in prayerful remembrance of classmates and colleagues now among the communion of saints. The Venerable Douglas Edwards, MDiv (’84), DMin, served as preacher, offering a stirring homily on how to become an abolitionist—not only in the historical sense, but as a faithful response to ongoing injustice and exploitation in today’s world.
The Hebrew Bible reading was offered by Mr. Dale Glasser, a leader in Judaism’s Reform Movement, and the New Testament lesson was read by Doug’s brother, Mr. Dennis Edwards, M.Ed., M.S., making the service both ecumenical and deeply personal.
Later that evening, alumni and friends gathered in the beloved and familiar setting of the Hoffman Refectory for a joyful banquet in Doug’s honor. Following the meal, the President of the Alumni Executive Committee conferred the Distinguished Alumni Award and hosted a conversation with Doug, reflecting on his bold ministry, entrepreneurial philanthropy, and decades of faithful service.
Doug’s life is shaped by audacious goals and unwavering follow-through. Through his foundation, the United Charities Endowment Fund of America (UCEFA), he has led transformative initiatives in Ghana: bringing safe water to more than 210,000 people, securing pensions for indigenous Anglican clergy, and rescuing nearly 800 children from slavery on Lake Volta.
“His commitment to identifying his sense of calling and following through with faithfulness and intensity is a tribute to all our alumni and a model for future students,” said Dean Michael DeLashmutt.
The evening was filled with gratitude, storytelling, and joyful connection—celebrating not only one remarkable alumnus, but also the enduring community that helped form him.
